The bees living on Cozumel Island, Mexico, are some of the most unique in the world.
Since Cozumel is farther from the mainland Mexico than bees can fly, their ancestors somehow snuck on a boat or plane to get there. Consequently, it is important for the island's mangroves and other plants that the bees survive once they arrive.
Bee Friendly Cozumel has been rescuing bee hives and swarms for more than 5 years, and this year they are on track to rescue more than 30 hives - and about 600,000 bees.
This year we have been supporting beekeepers with new rescue equipment and bee boxes to house the rescued bees. They have also started three new apiaries on the island to broaden the distribution of bees across the natural forested areas.
Within the next 6 months we hope to start a testing lab where bee hives can be tested for infection and intrusive insects and the honey tested for purity. The data from lab will allow the beekeepers to more rapidly attend to the hives that need action to protect the bee population and investigate the many healing properties of honey for wound healing, eye and sinus health, and aging-related conditions.
