Free pads for girls in Kenya
After seeing a friend unable to afford sanitary pads, thus unable to attend school, Joyce,15, knew she had to do something. On International Day of the Girl, she shadowed the Canadian High Commissioner in Kenya at a Plan International event, and petitioned government to support girls’ menstrual needs. Her voice was heard: last month, Kenya passed a law to give all schoolgirls free sanitary pads. “I was very shocked and happy. I couldn’t believe someone so small like me could contribute to the voices that made big people realize that girls are facing problems,” she says. “Now, girls can learn comfortably. I’m seeing a brighter future. Kenya will have strong women, who will lead this nation with both hands, and can walk strongly and say ‘I’m a woman and I am proud.’”
Honduras helps end child marriage
Last month, Plan International-supported youth helped convince government to raise the minimum age of marriage from 16 to 18 in Honduras. “I’m very happy and grateful,” says 11-year-old advocate, Ceily. “I also feel very proud of myself
for playing a part in something that will mean more happiness and independence for so many girls.
You helped reach 1.6 million girls & women in some of the most remote communities around the world with crucial
health information. That includes educating and training more than 30,000 youth in Bolivia on topics like sexual and reproductive rights.
"I’m learning, and as I do I’m losing my shyness about topics like sexual and reproductive health and rights. Now I guide my peers who trust me, but are afraid to ask questions to others. Together we’ll work for the wellbeing of our
community." – Jhovana, youth leader, supported by you in Bolivia
