Because I am a Girl Progress Report
Education and Economic Development in Senegal
Review of the need and project goal
More then one-third of youth in Senegal between 15 and 24 years old are illiterate, This situation largely stems from low-quality schools that have difficulty retaining students. Without sturdy, spacious classrooms, qualified teachers, desks, and sufficient school supplies, it is challenging for children to learn and remain motivated. And many children in rural areas, particularly girls, forgo their studies to help their parents with farming or domestic work.
Access to education therefore requires changes in schools, but also within families. Parents need a secure livelihood and financial support so they can afford to keep their children in school.
Impact to date
This five-year project is mid-way through its second year of implementation. During the first year and half, environmental impact assessments were done on the schools grounds designated for classroom, latrine and water point construction. This assessment guided the building plans so they would inflict minimal damage on the surrounding environment. In addition, communities and local partners learned about the project’s goals and the importance of promoting child right and gender inequality. The project could not be successful or sustainable if those impacted did not understand the objectives and willingly work with local staff and community leaders to make them possible. This tangible, yet invaluable training and awareness-rising laid the foundation for tangible activities to begin.
This project has come a long way in a short time. The following has been achieved thus far:
New desks for schools were built by a local youth organization, providing young people with the opportunity to hone a vocational skill and earn money
