Selfcare Workshops for Young People with Cancer

For many young people, the end of cancer treatment does not mean the end of its impact.

Long after treatment has finished, many continue to live with the physical and emotional reminders of their diagnosis. Changes to their appearance, weight fluctuations, scars and the lasting effects of treatment can all affect how they see themselves, leaving them feeling less confident and disconnected from the person they were before cancer.

Recovery is about so much more than physical health. It is about rebuilding confidence, rediscovering identity and helping young people feel comfortable in their own skin once again.

Thanks to your generosity through GlobalGiving, we are able to create opportunities that support this important part of recovery. Through experiences that promote wellbeing, self-care and peer connection, young people begin to rebuild not only their confidence, but also their belief in themselves and their future.

One such opportunity took place during this funding period when a group of young people were invited to a special Make-up Masterclass at Charlotte Tilbury's beautiful Covent Garden store.

Hosted by Charlotte Tilbury's expert team, the session offered practical skincare and make-up advice tailored to individual needs, while creating a welcoming and uplifting environment where young people could spend time together, laugh, learn and simply enjoy being themselves. At the end of the session, every young person received a generous Charlotte Tilbury gift bag, allowing them to continue their self-care journey at home.

For one young participant, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) at the age of 22, the event reflected a much bigger journey.

"Cancer has definitely left me with a constant feeling of uncertainty. I have been left with weight changes and scars, which have definitely knocked my confidence and self-esteem and, in some ways, I feel a little disconnected from my previous self."

Their experience is one shared by many of the young people we support. Cancer changes more than a person's health; it can change how they see themselves. By creating safe spaces where young people can reconnect with their confidence, learn new skills and spend time with others who understand their experiences, we help them take important steps towards feeling like themselves again.
