Beat Making Lab in Kenya

By Stephen Levitin | Co-Founder

The Beat Making Lab team has been just returned from Kenya!
We built our newest Lab in a vibrant community center in Nairobi called The Nest, with the help of an organization called The Rules to merge themes of tax justice, and political education and artistic expression. We held Beat Making Lab workshops, spoken word workshops led by Jamaican/feminist/lesbian poet Staceyann Chin, and digital power mapping workshops led by digital activist Ann Daramola (aka Afrolicious).
We will soon be releasing a short documentary follows one of our Beat Making Lab students, Moses, as he attempts to making a living in Nairobi by hustling jobs where he can. He was an active participant in our Beat Making Lab class, as well as Staceyann Chin's spoken word class, alongside dozens his Kenyan peers. The music video is a song co-produced by our students at The Nest. It features music, spoken word, and excerpts from Staceyann Chin's writing workshop, all mashed up into an anthem inspired by the theme: "All Oppression is Connected." As always, thank you for your support. Stay tuned!
