Tooro Basketball Academy – Quarterly Report (2025)

Reporting Period: April – June 2025
Target Group: Children aged 7–14 years
Core Focus: Learning, Playing, and Having Fun through Basketball

Tooro Basketball Academy is dedicated to empowering young people in the Tooro Region through inclusive and developmental basketball programs. This quarterly report highlights the key activities and progress made from April to June 2025, showcasing how training camps, weekly sessions, and outreach events are helping to build a strong foundation for personal growth and community engagement. Guided by the belief that grassroots basketball fosters not just athletic ability but also confidence, leadership, and social connection, the Academy continues to use sport as a powerful tool for youth transformation.

Grassroots Basketball Development for Young Children

The objective of Tooro Basketball Academy’s grassroots basketball initiative is to provide early access to the sport for children aged 7–14, fostering physical activity, inclusion, and personal development. Through structured training, the program builds essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and resilience, while also identifying and nurturing young talent. It serves as a bridge to education and future opportunities, aiming to develop not just skilled athletes, but confident, responsible, and connected young citizens.

Events

1 Holiday Camp Activities: Empowering the Young Through Sport.

Tooro Basketball Academy hosted a vibrant May Holiday Camp for children aged 7 to 14 years, providing a safe and supportive environment where 47 boys and girls could learn new basketball skills, express themselves creatively, and embrace the spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship.  Activities included:

  • Basketball Development Skills: Through structured drills, small-sided games, and friendly competitions. Emphasis was placed on teamwork, discipline, and physical fitness.
  • Presentation on Emotional Intelligence:  A special session was delivered to introduce young players to the principles of emotional intelligence. Topics covered included self-awareness, managing emotions, empathy, positive communication, and resilience — vital life skills that contribute to their development both on and off the court.
  • Dance and Movement Sessions:  These fun-filled sessions combined music, dance, and movement to promote body awareness, rhythm, coordination, and creative expression. It was also a great way to build confidence and team bonding in a relaxed setting.

Capacity Building for Youth Coaches:

Two of our Youth Academy Trainees were selected to attend a Capacity Building Training for Coaches. This professional development program enhanced their ability to plan effective training sessions, communicate constructively with young athletes and deliver age-appropriate coaching methods

These opportunities help grow the next generation of youth leaders and build sustainable coaching capacity within the Academy.

2.Ball 4 Kids Program – Expanding Grassroots Access

Ball 4 Kids is our flagship weekly program, designed to introduce basketball to children aged 7–14 years. It takes place every Sunday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Buhinga grounds, Fort Portal. Over 120 children have actively participated in the program since its inception.  Due to increased demand, we now conduct two separate sessions every Sunday:

  • Beginners Session: Tailored for newcomers focusing on basic motor skills, dribbling, and fun games.
  • Intermediate Development Session: For more experienced players focusing on game understanding, teamwork, and skill refinement.

This tiered training model ensures every child receives the right level of instruction and attention, while fostering progression and inclusion.

3. World Refugee Day – Celebrating Inclusion Through Sport

World Refugee Day was commemorated on 20th June 2025, and Tooro Basketball Academy proudly stood in solidarity with refugees around the world.

Event Overview:

  • Academy youth and coaches participated in basketball outreach activities at Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement.
  • The event brought together children from host and refugee communities, using sport as a unifying force.
  • Coaches from Tooro Basketball Academy began collaborating with local trainers in the settlement to lay the groundwork for a Ball 4 Kids program within Rwamwanja.
  • Promote inclusion, healing, and hope through basketball.
  • Provide structured activities that support emotional well-being.
  • Integrate refugees into the wider sports community in the Tooro Region and beyond.

Impact & Vision: The program aims to:

This initiative is an important milestone in using basketball to promote social cohesion and youth development in vulnerable communities.

4. Tooro Kids Basketball League (TKL) – Second Edition

After a highly successful inaugural TKL in 2024, we are thrilled to announce the return of the Tooro Kids Basketball League in September 2025.

Objectives of TKL:

  • Offer a structured competition platform for young basketball players.
  • Foster confidence, leadership, and teamwork through organized play.
  • Promote community engagement by bringing together families, fans, and local stakeholders.

The anticipation and enthusiasm among young athletes, parents, and community members is strong. TKL has become a beacon for the growth of youth basketball in the region.

5. Funding & Resource Needs – Strengthening our Impact

We are sincerely grateful to our donors, partners, and supporters. Your generosity enables us to continue our mission. However, with expanding programs and rising participation, we are currently facing critical resource challenges, especially in training infrastructure.

Immediate Needs:

  • Training Equipment: Basketballs, Marker cones and Team Bibs\training vest
  • Portable Basketball Hoops

o    Facilitation Support: Increase coaching staff, Volunteer/mentor support and logistics assistance

Currently, a limited number of basketballs significantly affects our training sessions. More equipment will ensure equitable ball contact for all players and improve session efficiency.

6. Future Plans – Building Community Courts Across Tooro Region

Tooro Basketball Academy’s programs are currently centralized at Buhinga, Fort Portal, which makes access difficult for children from remote districts.

Strategic Goal:

To expand basketball access to more children across the nine districts of the Tooro Region by:

  • Establishing community-based neighbourhood basketball programs in rural and peri-urban areas.
  • Partnering with local leaders, schools, and organizations to set up mini training hubs.
  • Launching satellite editions of Ball 4 Kids outside Fort Portal.

This expansion will help reach children with limited transport access, increase grassroots participation, and nurture homegrown talent across the region.

7. Closing Remarks

Tooro Basketball Academy continues to be a hub of youth empowerment, community building, and sporting excellence. Through our inclusive and educational programs, we are helping children not only become better athletes but also confident and compassionate individuals.

We thank every parent, coach, donor, and volunteer who has played a role in this journey. With your continued support, we are excited to expand our impact and bring the joy of basketball to every corner of Tooro
