Report on Kids League and Mini Games and Ball 4 Kids

Introduction

The Ball 4 Kids program is designed to introduce children to the sport of basketball, teaching them the fundamentals of the game while promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, and physical fitness. This report will cover the completed games and kids league's structure, objectives, achievements, and impact on participants. The first Kids league was held in September 2024, followed by Mini games in January 2025.

These games are an outcome of the Ball for Kids Program that conducts training every Sunday Morning at Buhinga Primary school. Through the Ball for Kids Program, young children aged 6 – 14 years have acquired a variety of skills and gained positive transformation as young athletes.

League & Mini Games Structure

These were open to both boys and girls and were divided into 3 levels which included the following;

  • Beginner level, focusing on basic skills and understanding of the game.
  • Intermediate level, where rules are more strictly followed, and strategy is introduced.
  • Advanced level, with full gameplay mechanics, team strategy, and competitive.

During the first edition of the Tooro Kids League we registered sixty kids (60). We divided them into six teams each team comprising of ten players. The teams included; SSB Blazers, Noble Pacers, Mondial Nets, Kairos Clippers, Booma Mavericks, Fort city warriors. SSB Blazers merged as the winners of the first edition TKL.

Objectives

1. Skill Development: Teach children the basics of dribbling, shooting, passing, and defense.

2. Teamwork: Encourage players to work together, share the ball, and strategize as a group.

3. Sportsmanship: Instill values such as respect for opponents, playing by the rules, and graciously accepting victory or defeat.

4. Physical Fitness: Promote physical activity, coordination, and healthy lifestyle habits.

5. Learn, play and make basketball fun, fostering a lifelong love of the game.

Program Structure

The edition ran for 3 days and the teams were trained and played games through a Round Robin Schedule.

  • Pre-edition training: Players went through skill-building sessions and scrimmages to develop fundamental techniques.
  • Regular edition: Teams competed in a round-robin format where each team played against each others .

Camp training with the guest coaches

TBA organized and hosted a guest from Kampala, Coach Ssentongo who is a 2-time winner of East African games and he coaches St Noah Girls.

A select team of the kids and girls were presented to him and he trained the kids on the fundamentals of basket and he trained the girls on the various skills and scrimmages and the camp lasted for 3 days.

He also carried out capacity building training for the Academy coaches working with the young children.

Impact and Achievements

  • Skill Growth: Many young children showed improvement in their basketball abilities by the end of the season. Coaches report progress in both individual skills and understanding of team play.
  • Character Development: The league emphasizes sportsmanship and fair play, and coaches have noted improvements in the children's confidence, leadership, and discipline.
  • Community Building: The league fosters strong relationships between players, coaches and families, building a supportive community centered around youth sports.
  • Increased Participation: Over the past few months, the academy has seen increased registration and participation, reflecting growing interest in the Ball 4 Kids basketball program and positive word of mouth.

Challenges and Requirements

While the Ball 4 Kids basketball program have been largely successful, a few challenges have arisen:

  • Limited Facilities: Some regions face issues with court availability, leading to overcrowded practice sessions. Expanding access to more local gyms or outdoor courts would help.
  • Coaching Resources: While volunteers have been excellent, offering more training or resources for coaches could further enhance player development.
  • Training Equipment like Basketballs and cones to match the trainee ratio and basketball jerseys for league events. These resources further support academy program development

Recommendations

Inclusivity: Ensuring that children of all skill levels feel welcome and supported is vital. More developmental clinics for beginners could help integrate less experienced players.

Conclusion

The Ball 4 Kids basketball program is a valuable program that not only teaches basketball but also promotes teamwork, leadership, and healthy living. With its growing popularity and the positive impact on its participants, it has the potential to expand further, helping more children enjoy the game of basketball and the life lessons it offers.

Future Plans

  • Expanding the league to accommodate more young children.
  • Introduce basketball to more young children in rural communities and increase community engagement.
  • Organise regular holiday camps and clinics to keep children active all year-round and develop life skills for the young children
  • Developing partnerships with local schools and businesses to secure sponsorships and enhance Academy operations.
