As unemployment continues to rise due to a decline in tourism, the need for greater food assistance in hard-hit areas is more present than ever. Lend a Hand Bahamas is currently supporting over 2,500 individuals with much-needed food relief.
The economic devastation to other parts of the country resulting from Hurricane Dorian this past fall combined with heavy impacts of COVID-19 has greatly affected the Bahamas as the unemployment rate could soon hit 30 percent with 25,000+ individuals currently laid off. The unemployment number is growing daily. Food security continues to be insufficient, and the need for support from private individuals to fight hunger is high, especially to meet short-term needs over the next few months.
Lend a Hand Bahamas has currently mobilized our staff and volunteers to support over 2,500 individuals on a weekly basis in the Bahamas. Through strong data collection and key community relationships, we have been supporting some of the most vulnerable individuals in the Bahamas documented and undocumented. There is a much larger need and we have the team and supply chain in place to be sure these individuals are supported.
As we seek to address short-term hunger needs in the country of the Bahamas, we are also looking to advance our educational and entrepreneurial programming to ensure we create more resilient communities that can survive future economic fallouts as a result of disasters like hurricanes and pandemics. By addressing the short-term hunger need while focusing on long-term sustainability, we are not just a feeding program but rather a model for community development.
