A life of colour

By Jasmine Ng | Project Leader

Raisa was born preterm at 34 weeks in Mymensingh, Bangladesh.

As Little Raisa was born early, her eyes were not fully developed and abnormal blood vessels grew in her retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of her eye. These blood vessels may leak, scarring and detaching the retina and may lead to lifelong visual impairment and blindness if not treated early.

Thankfully, Raisa's Retinopathy of Prematurity was detected early at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital during a routine eye screening for preterm babies. She received treatment at Dr K Zaman BNSB Eye Hospital, an Orbis partner hospital.

During a follow up session, Orbis-trained Dr Kripa found that little Raisa's eyes are recovering well and she should be able to grow up seeing the beauty of this world.

Raisa's parents Ramzan and Khadija said, "We thank Orbis and donors for establishing this essential Retinopathy of Prematurity service in the rural area of Bangladesh like Mymensingh. Without this, our precious daughter would not be able to see the light of this earth for her entire life."

Thanks to Qatar Fund for Development's generous contribution and the support of donors like you, little Raisa and many other Bangladeshi babies can live their lives in full colour.

You gave babies one of the most important gifts in life - their sight.

With sight, they can play with the their friends and neighbours. They can go to school to learn and get an education. They can grow up knowing how their parents, loved ones and the world look like.

They can do all these things - because of you. Thank you.

Always grateful,
Jasmine
