Dear Friends,
The Adolescent Youth Literacy Initiative that you supported through GlobalGiving is well underway. The level of participation has grown to 40 high schoolers seeking afterschool tutoring at William Fleming High School. We are looking forward to the spring semester when we can recruit an equal number of Virginia Tech students and community volunteers to serve as one on one tutors. By May 2011, we hope to have some metrics that demonstrate the impact of the initiative on the young people's academic performance.
In the meantime, GlobalGiving has invited us to showcase another initiative related to the Pilot Street Project for its December Open Challenge. We are showcasing our Family Literacy Initiative that benefits mothers with young children who would otherwise be unable to regularly attend ESL classes. Check it out at: http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/psp-familylit/.
I am writing to ask if you can support this particular initiative in two specific ways:
First, at our GlobalGiving project page, click on the SHARE button to link the project with your Facebook page. The projects with the most Facebook Shares can earn a bonus $300.
Second, email the project page with a personal message asking at least ONE FRIEND to support this project with a donation. If each of our Youth Literacy donors recruits one person to make a gift by December 22nd, then we'll be halfway to our goal of 40 unique donors!
Thanks for your assistance here. I appreciate your investment in literacy programming focused on newcomer populations.
Best, Michele James-Deramo
