Inclusive Education with Gati

By Gargi Bansod | Associate, Consortium

Gati conducted its 7th Core Group Meeting

To review the progress of the Gati program, we had our seventh Core Group Meeting at the Atma office in Dadar. In attendance were experienced women working in the field of education such as Franzina Coutinho from Inspirium Holistic Care, Radhika Misquitta from Gateway School Shamin Mehrotra from Ummeed, Sonali Saini from Sol’s ARC, Maya Kalyanpur from the University of San Diego, and Massarat Khan from Maharashtra Dyslexia Association. The focus of the meeting was to review the Gati-Adhyayan Self Review tool for inclusion. The group discussed the process in depth and suggested multiple inputs and recognised gaps in the tool. With each member sharing their opinions and valuable feedback, the Gati team has now improved upon the tool and is working towards making it concise.

Our First Inclusion School Self-Review

We have taken our first major step towards bringing inclusion in schools by conducting a school Self-Review (a tool we developed along with Adhyayan) at the school adopted by Reality Gives Program in Dharavi, Mumbai.

The management at Reality Gives has a progressive vision to make their school as inclusive as possible, and so opted for the Gati program. The 2-day Self-Review process gave a deep insight into the schools inclusive facilities and needs.

Our favourite part of the entire process was to see the youngest assessors on the team (students from Class IV) participate in the whole exercise with enthusiasm and understanding beyond their years. It was a great learning experience for the school as they found out how open-minded all their stakeholders, from staff, parents to students and helping staff, are towards including children of diverse needs in their school.

Following the review, Gati will provide specific recommendations to the school and support them to work towards their key needs for inclusion.

Special Edge Observation at Little Hearts Learning Centre in Chembur and Anandi School, Vile Parle

We kickstarted our class observation visits as a part of the Special Edge Programme with the Anandi School and followed it up with our second observation visit to Little Hearts Learning Centre. Our Special Edge program provides a specially designed curriculum to special ed schools in partnership with Sol’s ARC. The Special Edge team conducted observations for various levels at both schools, and guided the teachers through any doubts or queries they had. The visits concluded with a two-way feedback from each team and the schools.
