We are Migrant Workers' Action - a small organization protecting migrant domestic workers who survived conditions of human trafficking, forced labor, and abuse under the Kafala system. We are providing access to legal, medical, psychosocial, and livelihood services to support women's trauma recovery, family reintegration, and economic independence. This way, they can take care of themselves and their communities and rebuild their lives with safety, dignity, and a promise of a better future.
The Kafala system is known for its harms against migrant domestic workers who experience human rights violations, exploitative working conditions, and physical and sexual violence that compare to 'modern-day slavery'. For many women, their passports and phones are taken, their salaries are not paid, they are not provided with food, they get no time off, they are locked inside the house, and they cannot get life-saving services and aid, even during humanitarian crises. Only some manage to flee.
This campaign is for migrant domestic workers who want to return home, but need holistic support to be able to make it. It will assist survivors in accessing essential services, livelihood opportunities, and community networks. This includes legal documentation, medical treatments, psychosocial activities, vocational trainings, and seed money to start small businesses upon their return. We also raise awareness about their legal rights and the risks of human trafficking under the Kafala system.
This campaign supports the long-term recovery journeys of survivors and invests in their strengths and skillsets to find decent work, provide for themselves, and give back to their communities. It aims to promote protection services that are accessible, inclusive, and safe, and to reduce the risk of returnees getting trafficked again. We've worked with 926 women since 2020 - many of whom are now thriving and, in some cases, advocating for the rights of other women living under the Kafala system.
