We hope you are keeping well.
The past month has come with its own set of challenges for migrant domestic workers who are disproportionately affected by the mass displacement due to the escalating war in Lebanon. Many have had to flee or were evicted and were left in crisis: partly on the streets due to discrimination and exclusion from government-run shelters, and partly in overcrowded houses hosted by their own communities. We have been working closely with community organizers and providing immediate assistance to secure rent, food, and utilities, as well as referring migrants to other organizations providing services for legal, medical, psychosocial, and repatriation needs. We also supported community organizers with their crowdfunding campaign [here] and released a statement on the intersection of displacement and Kafala on IWD [here].
Your donations went directly to supporting three migrant women who were repatriated since December 2025, after facing complex challenges under Kafala. They received legal, medical, and psychosocial assistance, airport transportation, mobile data top-ups, and access to vocational training and livelihood opportunities in their countries. Among them is R.A. (alias), a former domestic worker in Lebanon, who had been taking sewing classes for months through MWA, and who finally settled back home and was warmly welcomed by her family. She reconnected with our aftercare partner and, while continuing her education, she has set up a small tailoring business as a means for extra income to support herself in Kenya. Such examples are a testament to the value of aftercare and how it helps women overcome barriers and rebuild their lives. We look forward to sending more updates and success stories from returnees as they progress through their reintegration journeys.
Meanwhile, MWA has been working on an insight report that deep-dives into aftercare: its philosophy, how it works, and how it has impacted the lives of returnees.
