MOTO Field Visit
Our “Moving Forwards” project supports the funding and building custom-made wheelchairs from locally resourced materials for those in need, especially in rural Kilimanjaro. In May 2023, we had, some of our private donors who joined to learn more about our work and visit some of the beneficiaries who have received the wheelchairs. It was an excellent experience for them to learn and meet directly with the beneficiaries
‘’We can all do our bit to help and give back. To now know some of these children can access and go to school, or simply just go outside is incredible, to witness it with my own eyes, is something else.’’ One of the donor..
The Wheelchair Project
As our mission in providing access to rehabilitation services to vulnerable people in Tanzania to enable them in sustainability in their community, our team with other partners, Kilimanjaro Mobility Aid Centre and Freedom Education Foundation, conducted a field visit at Kilimanjaro region, Same District-Kisima village. We visited children with physical and learning disability and asses their school physical environment and residence physical environment.
We had not only assessed the physical environment but also, using our occupational therapist, we were able to assess how their disability is hindering their participation in their daily life activities through that, basic education was given to their caregivers on how to support them in participating their daily life activities to their maximum level of functioning.
Given the assessments done, the main concern was mobility difficulties since they had no appropriate assistive devices that could enable their mobility, we had our wheelchair technician measure them for wheelchair provision as our main intervention. We also made sure to discuss with the school teacher on the renovation of the ramps since they were not accessible for the wheelchairs to ensure a long-term intervention and comfortability of the users around the school.
Access and Inclusion on Climate Change
People living with a disability are particularly vulnerable to the impact of climate change. We had the opportunity to visit NJIAPANDA Viziwi Primary School, a remarkable institution dedicated to educating children with disabilities to empower students with disabilities and their teachers to learn about climate adaptation interventions that can increase sustainable community resilience.
We carefully selected the participants who would receive the training, including teachers supervising the project. Next, we curated various topics on climate change and the best agricultural practices to be taught, ensuring alignment with the school's curriculum. The school proposed suitable dates to initiate the project.
