Update # 2 on Summer Arts Camp 2010

Summer Arts Camp 2010 Opening Ceremony

Monday, August 2 started the 2010 Summer Arts for 70 children from various Phnom Penh, Cambodia NPOs including the Phnom Penh Municipal Orphanage, Home of Peace AIDS Hospice, and children from  families participating in the Kasumisou Foundation AIDS Patient Family Support Program.  Although in 2010 we had planned to invite more than 100 children, we did not achieve our funding goal that would have   supported the transportation costs of  adding an additional 30 children to the existing core of 70 participants.  Consequently, we held our camp participants to its previous enrollment of  70.

Many of our  campers this year were repeat campers who had attended our 2009 session. These children were able to expand their knowledge of the basics of Khmer dance and to begin to learn roles in our original ecology play  “Our Friends in the Forrest”. For those children and new campers as well,  in addition  to the basic  agenda of  classic Cambodian dance, we expanded camp activities to include  musical instruction for  children who expressed an interest in attempting to learn to play traditional Cambodia musical instruments.  Also new to the Summer Arts Camp  program for 2010 were opportunities for children  to learn to sing traditional Khmer ( Cambodian) songs.

Campers added  a new experience as actors, presenting  an original  play about street children that was performed before their peers on September 18 on  the Apsara Arts Association play.

The camp provided a total of 43 days of activities for institutionalized and disadvantaged children who would otherwise  would not have had  any structured activity outside of their residence facilities  during the 2 month school break.  The Graduation  Performance was held on September 25 followed by a party for campers, students and teachers.  As a final Camp enrichment opportunity for 2010, Campers were treated to an outing at Udong Mountain on September 26 ,  ancient historical site which is now an amusement park and picnic and hiking area.

Please feel free to email us  with any questions or comments.
