In mid-October we had the pleasure of welcoming the second cohort of high school students to the Wilson 'n William Theatre Program. As we eagerly anticipate another year of self-discovery through the transformative power of Theatre Arts, we pause to celebrate the incredible achievements of last year's inaugural class and all they accomplished.
During the 2023-24 school, City Hearts piloted an original acting project called The Wilson ‘n William High School Theatre Program. We awarded 30 student scholarships for the year-long after-school program exploring the work and history of two of the most important and accomplished playwrights of all time: William Shakespeare and August Wilson, the seminal 20th-century playwright known as the “theater’s poet of Black America.”
Inclusive of all skill levels and acting backgrounds, the Wilson ‘n William program aims to enhance the artistic while endeavoring to be holistic through heart-centered acting coaching. Students have consistent and intentional opportunities to grow in their craft, work as an ensemble to build a safe, vibrant community, and access creative career mentorship.
Some of the many concepts covered in this program include:
Earlier this year, in February, City Hearts invited its ‘23-24 inaugural class to attend a private Masterclass Workshop with special Guest Actresses, Yvonne Senat Jones and Aasha Davis! Students received feedback on their monologue work with an exciting Q&A segment about their careers, the business of acting, and much more!
Then on April 20th, students came together at Nyman Hall on the campus of Hawthorne High School to perform powerful and emotional monologues in front of a live audience. Featuring a guest actor panel, including City Hearts alumna and social media sensation Honey Robinson, students received high praise and encouragement for a riveting show. In honor of their dedication, California Senator Steven Bradford awarded the students beautiful Certificates of Recognition.
What people are saying:
“The students speak of the program as an opportunity that has enriched their lives in profound ways, shaping not just their artistic skills but also their confidence, their sense of belonging, and their understanding of themselves. They've been challenged to push beyond their comfort zones, to explore new ideas, and to express themselves authentically.” Ms. Lorena Rodriguez, Community Schools Site Coordinator, Leuzinger High School, Centinela Valley Union High School District
"Watching the students perform made me tear up. City Hearts is doing amazing work and providing such a safe, creative space for these kids! Congratulations!" Jasmine Leon Guerrero, Sr. District Representative, Office of Senator Bradford
