Discovering Kerr

By Jeff Carr | Chief Executive Officer

As I reflect on the past 15 months that I have been a part of Albertina Kerr, there has been so much to “discover” in regards to the people we serve, community partners, sponsors, donors, the programs and services we provide, and the amazing staff who shepherd our mission and vision. It fills me with pride to continue the legacy of Albertina Kerr and build upon our storied history of the past 110 years. We have built a Kerr community that continues to thrive and grow with the expertise and innovation a non-profit must have in order to sustain itself in modern times.

Yet in order to continue that growth, introducing Kerring to others and allowing them to Discover Kerr is essential. Our Annual Luncheon this year was all about Discovering Kerr. Kerring is a unique word to Portland for caring for the vulnerable and unprotected.

On November 3rd, we told the story of all the ways we support and positively impact the Portland community, assisting in that effort, we honored two very important Kerr community members and a brave family who utilized all of our services in order to support their child with a dual diagnosis.

Connie West, a 36-year Kerr volunteer, past board president, and current historian was the recipient of the Joyce Manougian Lifetime Achievement Award. She has served our organization proudly and honorably and is a great asset to continue educating others on the history of Albertina Kerr. Carol Dinsmore, an Assistant Director of DDS, is a 35-year employee. She began her career at Kerr, met her husband at Kerr, and has a sister who receives our services. Kristie Nelson, mother to Nathan, who has a dual-diagnosis, actively sought out Albertina Kerr to support her son. She searched for years up and down the west coast for support for her son and their family and finally learned about Kerr; the only organization equipped to provide programs and services her child needed. He is now a focused advocate for himself and looks forward to going to college while learning to become independent.

Every day I discover the amazing things we accomplish and the ways we help others attain their accomplishments. What we do matters. Please take the time to educate others to Discover Kerr and welcome them into the Kerr community. Thank you for your support.
