Providing New Opportunities

By Chris Wiens | Manager, Foundation & Donor Relations

Cycling provides limitless opportunity to wind through valleys, speed downhill, travel for endless miles, or simply cruise along the water. Having the ability to enjoy these cycling experiences in a group or solo is something that one could take for granted, unless your body limits your mobility. The simple pleasure of riding a bicycle can be non-existent for those with a physical and/or developmental challenge.

Albertina Kerr and Kerr Bikes have partnered with BIKETOWN (Nike), the Portland Bureau of Transportation, and Different Spokes to pioneer an adaptive bicycle rental program that launched on July 21, 2017. This is the first city-sponsored program of its kind in the nation and the Albertina Kerr community is an integral partner. With generous funding from Nike and PBOT, the Adaptive Biketown pilot program will offer a variety of hand cycles, tandems, and three-wheeled bicycles through our rental bike service, Kerr Bikes OMSI, which is located along the Eastbank Esplanade in downtown Portland.

The program is a result of more than a year of planning and public input to open the doors for anyone who wants to experience the independence of cycling. This inclusive mindset is Albertina Kerr’s vision, to have all people thrive in nurturing and inclusive communities. Now it is a "shared vision" with strong, influential partners who believe everyone deserves to reach their full potential and lead self-determined lives.
