It has been a busy few months here at Apps for Good, September saw us deliver two of our popular Design an App in a Day workshops hosted by Skyscanner in their offices in London and Edinburgh.

London - 25th September

The 25th of September saw 20 students made up of 16 girls and 4 boys from The St Marylebone CE School and Elstree UTC travel into central London to take part in one of our Design an App in a Day workshops, these budding tech entrepreneurs came in ready to put the Skyscanner and Apps for Good employees to the test.

During the App in a Day sessions, the students were posed with a pre-set problem which they had to design a product to tackle. For the London and Edinburgh sessions, Skyscanner asked students to think of ways they could make travel more sustainable.

The day set off with students bouncing their ideas off one another to come up with an app idea that could solve the issue at hand. They then had the opportunity to think of different features the app would have and how they could use these features to make the app as effective as possible.

Some examples from the day were:

A)    An app that located water points at airports, so you didn’t have to throw your water bottle away at security

B)   A map based app that only offered sustainable/green travel options e.g electric cars and bikes

C)   An activity app that shows you green activity options near and in association with your hotel

The students then spent the afternoon pitching their products to employees and taking part in a Q&A session, these sessions are a great chance for students to showcase their creativity and public speaking abilities. And offer a fantastic chance for the employees to become inspired by the young people's passion and ingenuity.

Edinburgh - 27th September

On the 27th of September Skyscanner continued their engagement this time in their HQ in Edinburgh. We had Boroughmuir High School bring 30 students 14 of which were girls and 16 boys.

In a similar fashion to the London session students were asked to tackle problems related to sustainable travel.

Some examples from the day were:

A)    An app that shows car sharing opportunities

B)    An app that helps you use carbon neutral transport while travelling

C)    An app that helps you find the most eco-friendly hotels

After the sessions in both the London and the Edinburgh offices students were asked to leave feedback, which we are pleased to say were overwhelmingly positive, we pride ourselves on being able to bring students into industry offices inspire them and to organise a fun, informative day to be had by all!

One of the students from Boroughmuir proudly proclaimed that they "enjoyed being able to see inside a very interesting workplace and... enjoyed presenting".
