Project Report | Aug 2, 2013
Thank you! Next step: Tailored apprenticeships.

By Gretchen Roecker | Grants Manager

We’re delighted to report that with your generous support, Spark successfully surpassed the Give for Youth Challenge goal! In addition to engaging 62 individual donors and raising $6,222, Spark earned a spot on the Microsoft YouthSpark/Global Giving Give for Youth platform. This is an incredible opportunity for us to keep spreading the word about the value of bridging middle school classrooms and 21st century careers through tailored apprenticeships – all thanks to your investment Spark’s work.

While we’re excited about finishing the Challenge, we’re even more excited about how those dollars will translate into inspiring real-world learning experiences for Spark’s 7th and 8th graders. This August, Spark’s program teams in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Philadelphia will collaborate with 30 schools and hundreds of local workplaces to enroll 700 or more 7th and 8th graders for the 2013-14 academic year. Funds from the Give for Youth Challenge – your generous donations – will support personalized apprenticeships for four of those students this fall.

To ensure that each Spark student, from West Philadelphia to South LA, has the opportunity to learn from a supportive adult in a real professional environment, program teams are engaging mentors from workplaces across the country. This fall, Spark students will explore careers with programmers, product managers, designers, chefs, lawyers, architects, and more at workplaces ranging from small local businesses to global brands such as Cisco and Hulu.

We look forward to updating you on the experiences of the four students supported through this Challenge as they explore professions, learn about themselves and their communities, and build the skills they need to thrive in their classrooms and in 21st century careers. On behalf of all of us here at Spark, and the students your donations will support, please accept our sincere thanks. Together, we’re creating positive change for our nation’s youth and communities, one student at a time.
