La Reserva is appreciative to the donors contributing to the project “Angel’s Fruit Forest for the Maleku.” However, the owner of the land to be reforested, Angel Silva, has lost interest in the project and decided to use his land for other purposes. Therefore, we will be unable to move forward with this project. The donations raised for this project through GlobalGiving will be transferred to a different project within our organization that is more likely to be implemented. Ties with Angel and the Maleku tribe will be kept as we continue to advocate for reforestation and indigenous rights. If Angel decides to reconsider in the future, La Reserva will work with him to discuss new reforestation opportunities.
Our organization continues to work with the Maleku and advocate for indigenous rights. It’s through global awareness and directed resources to these communities that provide opportunities and avenues for them to continue to practice their cultural and economic traditions. Oftentimes these communities are forgotten or so far afield that people don’t take notice of their plight. We want to draw attention to how social and environmental justice should be focused on indigenous communities’ rights to the land and the forest.
We are always thankful to the people who are interested in and support our organization. Without their support, as well as the landowners and communities that work with us, we would not be able to make such a positive impact on people and the environment.
