Results of iron assessment in rural Guatemala

Year 1 of this project is now complete. During this time, we served 5 rural communities in Guatemala.  Iron status was assessed on over 500 people; both hemoglobin and hematocrit. Although we antiticipated that the rate of impaired iron status would be high, rates exceeded expectations. Approximately 50% of the population tested had both low hemoglobin and hematocrit values. We distributed 170 Lucky Iron Fish, and we will return in 1 year to determine the efficacy of this intervention. It was typical for all members of a family to have impaired iron status. Anthropometric measures were taken for all subjects, including children so that we are also able to monitor growth. Those living in rural, impoverished regions of Guatemala consume very little meat, and primarily consume diets consisting of rice, beans, and eggs.
