We leave for our medical mission to Guatemala March 10, 2016. Fifty students applied to go on the trip, and 25 students have been selected to participate. Students begin training for this mission by enrolling in a class that addresses a variety of topics including learning about the Guatemalan culture, medical issues, and blood testing procedures. Although we have not raised as much money as we hoped, we still have other avenues to pursue. We have been in contact with the manufacturers of Lucky Iron Fish and our order has been placed. In fact, we will be testing the efficacy of Lucky Iron Fish in a "new town" established for Guatemalans displaced by flooding and mudslides. After losing their homes, these individuals were relocated by the government, and now live in a barron region without water or electricity. A Lucky Iron Fish will be given to families with one or more members testing positive for anemia. We will return to the region next year (March 2017) to determine the efficacy of Lucky Iron Fish in reversing anemia. Our project submission to Human Subjects has been reviewed and is pending approval. That is all for now. I will have more to report after our trip in March.
