AMPATH Surgery has been busy over the last 3 months.  Work is underway to improve trauma care and delivery in western Kenya.

AMPATH Surgery has hosted two medical students and two surgical residents from North America in Eldoret.  In addition to clinical work, they have been active in helping with educational activities.  With their help, we were able to incorporate the TEAM (Trama Evaluation and Management) course into the medical school curriculum.  This program introduces concepts of trauma assessment and management to medical students during their clinical years.

In addition to that, enough money was raised to fund two Moi/MTRH surgical residents to attend ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) in Nairobi mid-July.  The course cost $380/student.   This program teaches doctors a systematic, concise approach to the care of a trauma patient.  With more doctors trained in ATLS, we plan to promulgate the course in western Kenya by hosting the program in Eldoret in 2018.

Progress has also been made to improve research in trauma care in Eldoret.  Our team has received IRB approval to initiate a trauma registry in Eldoret, Iten, and Kapsabet - three towns in western Kenya.  With improved understanding of trauma in this region, we can begin to learn the public health interventions that are needed to prevent trauma.

Thank you for your support!
