Education, mental wellbeing and health in Tultitlan

By Stephanie Ahlgrain | Manager of Fundraising and Alliances

Dear friend,

We hope you are well.  As you may know, during the month of July we created a micro-project here on GlobalGiving to fundraise for psychological services in Tultitlán and Lomas de San Isidro.  We can't thank you enough for believing in this project and the children in Tultitlán.

During the pandemic services that help people deal with grief, job loss, confinement, boredom, stress, and strained relationships gained new importance.  In Tultitlán, families lost between 20% and 80% of their income due to the pandemic, and this is coupled with the medical needs of the community due to very high numbers of Covid-19 cases.  To say the least, it has been a difficult time for families in Tultitlán. Amextra's role has been to listen and respond when possible. Three of the most important ways we have responded to the families' needs since the beginning of the pandemic have been 1) continuing to provide free education services 2) delivering food and hygiene kits 3) psychological attention.

In terms of education, we have been serving an average of 50 children per week at the community center, divided between two shifts, morning and afternoon, and two classrooms to ensure social distancing.  We also recently held two in-person sessions of the Forming Values for Nonviolence model for children, respecting all sanitary recommendations for the State of Mexico. Children used masks, washed their hands before starting the workshop, and stayed at least 4 feet apart.  In these workshops students expressed how they felt on the day of the workshop and then did activities to practice the values of teamwork and cooperation.

We're thankful for your support of this always-evolving project.  If you have any questions or would like any additional information please feel free to reach out to us by email or on Facebook and Instagram.

All the best,

Stephanie Ahlgrain
