Americares is responding to a deadly Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which has claimed more than 100 lives and sparked a global health emergency. Americares is supporting local partners with prevention, training, and coordination with global health agencies to contain the outbreak and protect communities.
The situation is urgent. The World Health Organization has declared a public health emergency of international concern, warning that the outbreak could be much larger than currently known. It is especially worrying because this particular outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which there are currently no approved treatments or vaccines. The outbreak has already claimed over 160 lives, and more than 600 suspected cases have so far been reported.
We are focusing our response efforts on preventing infection, community-level education and improving access to safe water in the affected areas. Education on handwashing and the signs of Ebola can help stop the spread of the virus. Through a local partner, Americares is also helping rehabilitate and construct water points in high-risk communities and distribute hygiene kits to health facilities and public spaces.
We are in close communication with global response coordination bodies, including the World Health Organization and the UN to assess needs and explore how we can best support response efforts. We are tracking regional implications and staying closely connected with partners in neighboring countries to support preparedness and help mitigate cross-border risks. Drawing on our experience from past Ebola outbreaks, we are focusing on strengthening local health systems through trusted partners.
