Project Report | Jan 26, 2011
Portland Step Out set for Saturday, Sept 10, 2011

By Jeremy Hall | Project Leader

The Portland Step Out: Walk To Stop Diabetes will take place Saturday, September 10, 2011 from the Rose Quarter.  Online registration begins March 15th @ diabetes.org/stepout.  Funds raised from Step Out in 2010 went to support these local efforts:

Type 1 Focus:

Safe at School Program: Offers knowledge, information and resources about type 1 diabetes and aspects of management for both school personnel and classmates. Such education seeks to ensure the safety of children with type 1 diabetes in school. In 2010, we visited 114 schools and trained 807 school personnel.  This national program started in Oregon/SW Washington in 1997.

Family Link Program: Connects parents of newly diagnosed children or those facing difficult times with trained parent mentors and other resources (ex: wisdom kit) specifically for children with diabetes.

Jim Hansen Memorial Seminar: This Family Link event for kids with type 1 diabetes and their families provides parents with the latest in research, technology and management tips for type 1 diabetes and fun activities for the children.

Type 2 Focus:

American Diabetes Alert Day : Held on the fourth Tuesday of every March,  the American Diabetes Association’s Diabetes Alert Day will encourage people to join the Stop Diabetes movement by taking the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Type 1, Type 2 &Prevention Focus:

Research: We currently fund three research projects in our area that total $1,196,753. Our funded researchers include:

Michael Harris, Ph.D. OHSU, Harold Schnitzer Diabetes Health Center

Wei Fan, MD. OHSU, Center for the Study of Weight Regulation & Associated Disorders

David Mason Cohen, MD. Portland Veterans Affairs Research Foundation, Nephrology & Hypertension

Annual Practice Update: A continuing education program for health care professionals who have an interest in diabetes treatment and delivery of patient education. For over 30 years, this regional update has provided emerging trends in both scientific and clinical diabetes information. Average registration is over 380 health care professionals.

Diabetes Expo:  Diabetes Expo in February 2010 drew more than 5,000 attendees. Over 9 years the Expo has provided free services, screenings and health care information to over 36,000 attendees.

Resources: Locally, we sent more than 30,000 pieces of information and materials to individuals, companies, hospitals, churches, service and health care organizations.

Health Fairs: Participated in over 40 Health Fairs or Community Forums reaching nearly 7000 people
