On May 22, 2017, the American Diabetes Association of Oregon, SW Washington and Idaho hosted the first in a series of Safe Sitter Workshops at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland. A group of 28 people attended the training, including coaches, grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends and neighbors. Each one of these individuals takes care of a child with diabetes or wants to try to ease the sometimes overwhelming care that parents must provide to their child with diabetes by giving them the day off.
Two of our Safe at School nurse trainers hosted the evening, reviewing a wide range of topics related to diabetes. The session opened with a discussion of what diabetes is, and the science behind what we know about diabetes. We then discussed carbohydrate counting and reviewed new and emerging technology that allows children with diabetes more freedom and flexibility with how they manage their diabetes.
The evening allowed for plenty of engaging discussion and open question and answer time so that our attendees could learn everything they could about diabetes. We also had several hands on activities where attendees could learn more about insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitors, and glucagon, so that they would be ready to care for a child in case of emergency.
We are looking forward to bringing our Safe Sitter Workshop to cities all across the state of Oregon, so be on the lookout for more information on our website about dates and locations near you!
