Standing up for people with diabetes

On March 13, Diabetes Advocates from all over Oregon, including our incredible Diabetes Youth Advocates, attended Diabetes Day at the Capitol to discuss important diabetes issues with their legislators.

The day included a discussion about current diabetes issues, training on how to talk with legislators effectively and visits with lawmakers. The goal of Diabetes Day at the Capitol is to let our elected officials know the importance of supporting people with diabetes.

Here are a few highlights from our day at the Capitol:

  • Our Diabetes Advocates met with eight members of our Oregon State Legislature who represent Oregonians across the state and in both urban and rural areas. Our advocates shared how diabetes has affected them and asked for the legislator's support of measures that can help all people affected by diabetes.
  • Senator Arnie Roblan, Chair of the Oregon Diabetes Caucus met with ADA Youth Advocate Tegan Johnson, pictured. Senator Roblan and the Diabetes Caucus help find bipartisan solutions for the growing diabetes epidemic in Oregon
  • The Oregon House of Representatives acknowledged our Diabetes Advocates during both the House Floor Session and in the House Healthcare Committee meeting, helping us build recognition for the important work that we do here in Oregon and the work that is yet to be done.

We are so proud of the dedication and passion of our Diabetes Advocates. If you'd like to join this group of Advocates, please sign up here.
