When Breeayn enrolled her son in preschool, she never expected that her son would be turned away because of his diabetes. Three-year-old Micaiah needed assistance with checking his blood sugar, but the staff felt their medical policy did not allow for this. This meant Micaiah could not go to school without a parent to assist him. So Breeayn called the American Diabetes Association. She spoke with staff from the Portland office, who referred her to one of the Association’s Legal Advocates. With the help of the ADA’s Safe at School program, staff were trained so that Micaiah could safely return to school.
The story of Micaiah is one of many we hear every day. Our Safe at School program provides trainings to more than 120 schools each year and trains more than 1,000 teachers and school staff, so that children with type 1 diabetes can attend school and safely manage their diabetes — and have the same learning opportunities as every other child.
We could not provide the Safe at School program without the financial support of people like you.
Safe at School is just one of the many services that we provide to people living with diabetes in our local community. At OHSU, the American Diabetes Association funds more than $1.3 million in diabetes research; over 1,000 people participate in our Living with Type 2 program; and we continue to provide critical support and information to thousands of people living with diabetes and pre-diabetes in Oregon and Southwest Washington.
Please help us continue our mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes, including the nearly 400,000 people in Oregon and Southwest Washington who are living with diabetes today.
Together we can Stop Diabetes.
