The number of children being diagnosed with diabetes (either type 1 or type 2) is rising. Younger/newly diagnosed students depend on the adults around them to help monitor their blood sugar and administer insulin. In an effort to make schools and school sponsored activities a safer environment, the American Diabetes Association created the Safe at School program. Concerned parents reach out to the ADA who then connect them with local volunteer trainers. These Safe at School trainers educate teachers and school staff who may be coming in contact with the child on how to treat and recognize high/low blood glucose and how to administer emergency glucagon.
With school being out for the summer, we are already gearing up for the next school year by scheduling multiple trainings across Oregon and SW Washington so that students and families feel safe returning to class this fall. Some private schools may not be required to hire additional staff to care for a student with diabetes as a public school would, so this program ensures that students living with diabetes have the same opportunities as those who are not.
Funds raised by Tour de Cure and the American Diabetes Association go towards advocacy, research, and education efforts. Without the support of our donors, the Safe at School program would not be possible. You can get involved by participating in our local Tour de Cure, coming up on July 27th at AmberGlen Park in Hillsboro, OR. We welcome all walkers, riders, and cyclists to join us! Your support can make a difference not only in the lives of students living with diabetes, but all people impacted by diabetes.
