Living Well with Diabetes

Kelley was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was eight years old. It was a bewildering time for her parents. Luckily, a wonderful Diabetes Educator came into their lives and taught them what they needed to know and supported them through the years. The American Diabetes Association in Anchorage, Alaska became part of their lives as well. They regularly participated in the Diabetes Bike-O-Thons and other workshops and activities in the Anchorage area. Her father even served as the ADA President there!

When Kelley was diagnosed, the doctors told her parents she would not live past the age of 30. Well - she's proved them wrong! Because of the support and research provided by the American Diabetes Association over the years since she was diagnosed, she has lived a healthy, strong and relatively complication-free life!

In 2018, Kelly started a Tour de Cure team with her co-workers at CORE (Center for Outcomes Research and Education) and some Providence friends who are as committed to finding a cure as she is. She was honored to be their team captain last year, and has already signed up to participate again in 2019!

Tour de Cure is an amazing way for those living with diabetes, and their friends, family and coworkers to come together to raise money and awareness for this difficult disease. While we've come a long way since Kelley was diagnosed, we still have work to be done to make sure that everyone living with diabetes has access to the the medicine and technology they need to thrive with the disease, while we work towards finding a cure.

Consider joining Tour de Cure in 2019 to help us move closer towards a world free of diabetes and its complications.
