Dear Nature supporters,
Thanks to your aid, the Native Community of Monte Carmelo has been able to take important steps towards conservation of their natural and cultural heritage.
Over the past months, we were able to bring the tree nursery back into production, after it had been devastated by the heavy weather of the rainy season (November till March). In the communal tree nursery, the people of Monte Carmelo produce all kinds of seedlings of native plants that have an importance for local biodiversity and their livelihoods. Examples of plants that are currently being propagated are Huayruros (Ormosia sp.), Huacrapona (Socratea exorrhiza), Bambu (Guadua angustifolia), Ungurahui (Oenocarpus bataua) and Tiroti (Astrocaryum murumuru). The saplings are produced from locally gathered seeds and will be planted in degraded parts of the forest around the villages.
Children of Monte Carmelo with a keen interest in science and nature conservation, can now participate in the Science Club Inkenishi, and young adults in the bird watchers club Tsimeri. Through these clubs, we aim to bring villagers from all ages closer to the natural environment in which they live and motivate them to help protect it. Both clubs participated in workshops and forest visits.
Furthermore, we have been able to continue the works on the Communal Interpretation Center, by connecting it to water and electricity.
