Purpose on the Planet supports improved livelihoods for vulnerable communities in Madagascar and Tanzania through large-scale tree planting & long-term forest conservation programs, in order to avert the worst impacts of extreme poverty today & climate change tomorrow. Since 2012, the community-based projects we support in Africa have provided an innovative and holistic platform for transforming a spiral of poverty-based decline into a virtuous cycle of positive development instead.
REDUCING THE IMPACTS OF EXTREME POVERTY TODAY & CLIMATE CHANGE TOMORROW Both Madagascar & Tanzania fall within the world's top 3 countries where extreme poverty is having the most devastating impact. Africa has one-fifth of the planet's remaining forests but is losing them faster than anywhere else. Better protection and restoration of these forest landscapes could reduce or remove 1 billion metric tons of CO2 annually while helping hundreds of thousands of Africans earn a better living.
Every $20 contribution will: RELIEVE POVERTY - Fund one day of work & income for villagers living in extreme poverty RESTORE NATURE - Plant 45 trees at the two restoration projects we support in Africa REMOVE CO2 - Sequester around 1 metric ton of CO2 during typical maturation. We are currently supporting brighter livelihoods for 50 community members, who are planting an average of 7000 trees every month and protecting 2500 hectares of restored ecosystems in two vital biodiversity hotspots.
By 31 December, 2030, we are aiming to: - Provide sustainable livelihoods for over 100 community members living in extreme poverty at Recruit & Restore project locations in Africa; - Plant a minimum of 1 million mangrove and ficus trees while protecting 5000 hectares of vital ecosystems at the current project locations in Madagascar and Tanzania - Sequester a minimum of 10,000 metric tons of CO2, as measured by Quantified Carbon Impact Statements at our adopted sites in Madagascar and Tanzania.
