A third of all children in Greenland is experiencing alcoholism in the immediate family. Many of them will have a tough childhood marked by failure, violence and sexual abuse. Often they do not say anything. Others do not ask.
When father and mother drink, children need well-functioning adults in their lives that will help. Blue Cross Denmark launched a campaign in Greenland to teach professionals and ordinary citizens how they can help children in families with alcohol abuse. The center of the campaign is a publication called "Open your eyes - talk about it" in 4,000 copies, which will be distributed to a number of public authorities and all departments of the Blue Cross Greenland. In addition, Blue Cross Denmark created a Greenlandic website for help to children in families with alcohol abuse.
In addition to the awareness campaign, two psychologists have been dedicated to work with children and young people in Greenland to teach two courses in Nuuk. One course is for Blue Cross members, while the second is for professionals who meet children and families in their work. Both courses taught participants to detect when a child is living in a family with alcohol problems and how they can best help the child.
"We saw the material that Blue Cross Denmark published in 2011 in its campaign" Next Help "for children and wanted a similar material in Greenlandic. Every town in Greenland have children with parents who drink. The need to know how to help, is very large, "says Elisabeth Lyberth, president of Blue Cross Greenland.
"Many of the councils from Denmark can also be used in Greenland, but there are also cultural differences. Therefore, we linguistically and culturally adapted booklet, website and educational materials to fit the circumstances of Greenland, "says communications director at Blue Cross Denmark, Per Breindahl, which along with Blue Cross Denmark's Secretary General also is in Greenland this week to talk about the Blue Cross 'work for children.
"To prevent the abuse of alcohol and marijuana is the highest priority in our Public Health Program Inuuneritta II. The negative consequences of growing up in a family with abuse is great and it's hard to break the negative social legacy. We are happy for the initiative from Blue Cross because it supports our goal that no child is experiencing adults who are affected by alcohol or marijuana, "said Steen Lynge, a member of the Greenland Government and sits in the Department of Health and Infrastructure in Greenland.
Now that the campaign is underway, Blue Cross of Denmark together with Blue Cross if Greenland are working to identify locations that can serve as alcohol-free spaces for the children. We thank you for your support and look forward to sending you more information after the long, cold winter!
