Amito: Her Journey to a Brighter Future

By Warren Nuwenyesiga | Monitoring and Evaluation Officer

Amito: Her Journey to a Brighter Future

Amito, a 17-year-old orphan, resides with her mother in Lira town. Due to financial constraints, she had to discontinue her education after Primary Seven in 2019 and worked as a domestic worker for Ugx. 3,000/= per day at a neighbor's place to support her mother.

Her circumstances changed when she discovered the Platform for Labour Action (PLA) project through a community leader. She joined the project and received hairdressing training at the Nile Vocational Institute in Jinja. Following her training, Amito interned at “Aunt Salon” in Banda. Her commitment and hard work led to her being offered a permanent position by her employer. In addition to her salon work, she established a mobile salon business, providing hair services to clients in their homes.

Currently, she earns approximately UGX 200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Uganda Shillings) per month from her salon job and mobile business. She uses her earnings to meet her basic needs and assist her mother. With a focus on the future, she is saving diligently with the aspiration of opening her own salon by the  2024.

Faith is thankful for the skills she gained through PLA, which have enabled her to become self-sufficient, support her mother, and save for the future. She expresses her gratitude for the opportunity provided by PLA and advocates for the expansion of the program to reach more children involved in child labor, offering them a chance at a better future.
