Success story of Atai

By Samuel Odongo | Administrative Assistant Lira

My name is Atai, I have been a PLA beneficiary from 2013 to 2015 at Lira Primary school where I completed my primary seven. When I completed primary seven, I joined Hair dressing as a course in one of the busy saloon in Lira town

After completing the training, I started plating hair for my customers as well as making liquid soaps.

As we were many PLA beneficiaries, I called my colleagues and we formed association called Vision Ventures Women Entrepreneurial Association where we contributed 20,000/= as membership and registration fees.

In total we contributed 450,000/= and we used this money to hire a business place as well as buying materials for beginning our saloon. Since my colleagues did not know how to plait, I started by training them at no cost after them finished their training, we had to open a training centres where we were training ladies and boys on how to plait hair, making Liquid soap as well as  opened a restaurant.

Since three of our colleagues learnt how to make clothes, we also contributed and we bought for them tailoring machines from our contributions as well as opened tailoring training centre where we train people.

Currently, we are training people with how to make liquid soap, Hair dressing tailoring , bakery. We applied  for Emyooga program a government programme that supports women enterprenuerers in Northern Uganda  and we are expecting money from the government to expand our entrepreneur Association. We credit Platform for Labour Action and GlobalGiving supporters  for providing us with basic education and connecting some of my colleagues in some schools to do vocational studies as well as to do secondary education.
