quarterly report July to October 2019

Platform for Labour Action with support from GlobalGiving is implementing a project entitled “Educate 100 War and HIV/AIDS Orphaned Ugandan Girls”. PLA is implementing a GlobalGiving program entitled Educate 100 War and HIV/AIDS Orphaned Ugandan Girls whose overall goal is to empower female children through education in Lango Sub region. This project was started as a response to the 21-year-old LRA war that left many children orphaned and destitute. There is a pressing need for rehabilitation and empowerment of female children through education. Lira district is no longer affected by war and the communities are in rehabilitation where there is need to better the future for all children especially the female children through providing the children with education.

Platform for Labour Action (PLA) through the GlobalGiving Donors is providing support for a better future to 23 girls currently leaving in Lira district 3 in primary five, 5 in primary six, 15 in primary seven and all these children are girls. The project provides support to war and HIV/AIDS orphaned girls and those girls living with HIV/AIDS positive status with school fees, Lunch fees, counseling, scholastic materials such as books, pens, pencils, rulers, rubbers and school uniform, Toilet paper and mathematic sets and sanitary pads.

School fees Payment

This quarter a total of one million seven hundred ninety six thousand shillings (1,796.000/=), PLA managed to clear school fees for three schools in the North that. The schools are Sir Samuel Joe Nursary and Primary School, Ireda Primary School and Omito Primary School

For all the discussion shared with class teachers for these pupils, it shows that, these children are performing well and they need more support from the organization in order for them to perform better than the way they are performing. The support which is to be provided urgently are Sanitary Pads and scholastic materials, During school visits in the month of September 2019, Head teachers of the schools whom the organization had cleared their fees promised to hand over report cards which was detained by school bursars to these children within a shorter period.

School monitoring visit were made, PLA Lira field staff officers visited the schools to ensure welfare for the children, provide them with psychosocial support, checking on their performance though all the schools did not give Administrative Associate opportunities to meet with these children since they failed to clear school fees for the Las three terms. Below are therefore the activities carried out in the three months of July, August and September 2019.

Home Visits

Three home monitoring visits were made to the home of Atoke during holidays. Atoke was visited because she was declining at school in her performance  and it was suspected that it had to do with her living conditions.

Guardian to Atoke, Ms. Ongom

Ms. Ongom appreciated PLA for supporting Atoke.  She reported  that it was not going to be easy to support Atoke`s education with GlobalGiving`s support. She further asserted that she is a poor widowand she took on Atoke  whom she found abandoned by her mother  in the rental house near her home when she was eight years old and its coming to four years now and the mother has never come come for her daughter so Ms. Ongom has now assumed guardianship of the girl. She said that she is able to look for what to eat through the little business she does by selling Banana at the roadside. She said that, even her children are not studying because she lacks money to pay their fees and she thanks God so much for supporting Otoke with school fees.

SCHOOL MONITORING VISITS AND THE MATTERS ARISING FROM THE VISITS

During the quarter twelve (12)  school monitoring visit were conducted, PLA staff visited all schools and they appreciated and commended the schools  for accommodating our children for many terms without  their  fees being cleared.

The schools which were visited included; Sir Samuel Joe Nursery and Primary School, Ireda Primary School, Otim Tom Primary School, Omito Primary School, Erute Primary School, King James Primary School, Lira Model Primary School, Railways Primary School, Lira Army Primary School, Ojwina Primary School and Ober Primary School in Lira District,

Twenty three (23)  female children were visited and they received counsel on a number of issues affecting them; They were  further provided with psychosocial support and their teachers were also interacted with .

They shared their challenges and devised ways in which PLA could help. The staff also requested all School Administrators to be kind to these children and reliant especially if school fees take long to be cleared by the organization. The staff informed the school administration that the vulnerable children need support from the whole community at large including the school itself and sending the children home for school fees well knowing that its not the children`s guardians  who pay the school fees could discourage these children from of studying.

A visit to one of the class teachers to two of our children  Mr. Okullu  at Sir Samuel Joe Nursery and Primary School.

Mr Okullu class teacher to Atim  who is currently in Primary six (p.6) and Atoke  who is currently in Primary seven (p.7)  at the above school.

He started by appreciating PLA for supporting venerable girls in the North. He reported that, Atim is a a well performing girl  in the class and that  she is amongst the best 10 in His subject (Mathematic)

He stated that she could perform more than she is doing, but she lacks scholastic materials andTextbook. He also said that if possible, organization as a parent of these children should provide them with scholastic materials and textbooks to improve on their performance. He said that the preferred textbooks to be given to these children should be MK textbooks.

He also requested organization to provide these children with sanitary pads, smearing oils, School uniforms and shoes every term, which can cover all months.

He also requested the organization through their representative Administrative Associate to take these children to secondary education after completion of their primary Level.
