Platform for Labour Action with support from Global Giving is implementing a project entitled “Educate 100 War and HIV/AIDS Orphaned Ugandan Girls”. PLA is implementing a project with support from the aglobal giving program entitled Educate 100 War and HIV/AIDS Orphaned Ugandan Girls whose overall goal is to empower female children through education in Lango Sub region. This project was started as a response to the 21-year-old LRA war that left many children orphaned and destitute. There is a pressing need for rehabilitation and empowerment of female children through education. Lira district is no longer affected by war and the communities are in rehabilitation where there is need to better the future for all children especially the female children through providing the girl child with education.

Platform for Labour Action (PLA) through the Global Giving Donors is providing support for a better future to 28 girls currently leaving in Lira district 1 in primary four, 7 in primary six, 6 in primary five, 20 in primary seven. Previously we have been supporting 58 children with Primary education but 30 of (58) these have left or advanced for the secondary level of education. Of the 30 children, 23 are in secondary school while 6 dropped out The project provides support to war and HIV/AIDS orphaned girls and those girls living with HIV/AIDS positive status with school fees, Lunch fees, counseling, scholastic materials such as books, pens, pencils, rulers, rubbers and school uniform, Toilet paper and mathematic sets and sanitary pads.

Out of 26 beneficiaries who completed primary seven last year 2018, 20 of them joined secondary schools on merits through sports and good performance in their primary Leaving Examination Board. Some of the schools they are attending include are the following; The Vision High school, St Mary Kitente on sport, St Mary Aboke Girls SS, King James Comprehensive SS, Premier Progressive SS and St Katherine secondary school. Majority of the children are doing well and have gone ahead to get scholarships for secondary education 20 of the 26 children are attending schools without having to pay school fees in secondary and they are appreciating Platform for Labour Action for supporting them. For instance  Akullu went to ST. Mary Kitende  in Kampala,Kitende is one of the best private schools in Uganda. She reported that without Platform For Labour Action and global giving`s support, she was not going to reach Kitente. She said that she will not forget about Platform for Labour Action in her life. The six girls need funds for school as they finalized primary school and hence need to support them either with vocational training or secondary school.Without further support they are unable to continue with school.

School monitoring visits

Schools were visited by PLA staff to assess the living conditions of the children and to provide them with psychosocial support, checking on their performance. The schools have had to be patience with the organization as the organization has taken long to complete payments for the school fees for all the children and it has been a challenging quarter to even access the information from schools because of late payments of school fees and also having arrears.

. The school which was visited was Sir Samuel Joe Nursery and Primary School, Eliaoulet Primary school, King James Comprehensive School, Lira Primary School and Otim Tom Primary The school teachers and Head teachers play big roles in accommodating beneficiaries at school and providing them with meals though the organization has not paid their fees and meal fees due to Lack of fund.

All the schools are still allowing school beneficiaries to attend including where the schools fees had not yet been paid.

All the schools did not released report card to these children at the end of every term as they claimed that, they will released report card to these children or their organizationafter clearing of the school fees due.

recommendation to look for community fund from Global giving to support children who want to go for vocational training.
