We have received some rains though not heavy as it was expected. Our project beneficiaries have taken the advantages of these rains and planted some crops in their demo plots. We are currently considering raising funds which will be used to install rope and washer pumps in beneficiaries’ homesteads. Rope and washer techniques is installing hand manual pump used to draw water from shallow wells a very simple and safe method. Most farmers have their shallow wells in their homestead and they use rope and container to draw water from the well. This method is very dangerous as it is very unsafe to the family members and livestock and the quality of the water is very poor thus causing water borne diseases. Rope and washer pump saves a lot of time and it is very safe in such a way that young children can draw water from the well easily and safely and water drawn is clean. We are considering this activity as the beneficiaries will use water for domestic purposes as well as irrigating their kitchen gardens during the dry spell thus ensuring that they will be food secure throughout and will have access to variety of vegetables in which they can sell the surplus.
We have also exposed our beneficiaries in youth polytechnics where they have leant various techniques of urban gardening and they have already started practicing them. This exposure has enabled them gain a lot of knowledge and skills not only on crop but also on livestock rearing. We intend to continue exposing them whenever we have the opportunities.
