The summer was great because we were together again with the children! In June we welcomed new children into our Bulgarian language program – some newly arrived refugee children who wanted to learn the language of their host country but also a couple of Bulgarian kids who wanted to develop their mother tongue fluency. It’s amazing how children speaking different languages can communicate, learn from each other and spend time together. During the regular educational activities children worked with many texts and improved their reading and writing skills. Also, they used various materials to learn how to implement projects and prepare presentations. In addition to these activities, we organized some creative classes for those kids who really love drawing and art. Usually, as a part of the summer program, we organize our traditional summer camp but that was impossible to do this year due to the spread of COVID-19. But that doesn’t mean that there were no adventures left. There is no kid who doesn’t like animals – therefore we organized horse riding for the children in our afterschool classes during the summer program. They rode twice a week and those who participated regularly can already ride independently. Horse riding motivated them to put more efforts in learning and helped them to overcome some communication problems. It also inspired them to develop their talents. The other thing which children enjoy a lot is biking. In order to encourage kids to spend more time outdoors one of our volunteers ran a small donation campaign to repair the bikes of the family-type accommodation centre. This allowed children to go cycling in the park and have a great time together!

Due to the COVID–19 pandemic Reachout’s center was closed in the last three months. We reached the children online, talked with them through video calls and provided individual speechsessions via Skype. The insufficient number of computers didn’t allow us to provide them direct educational support. Every week we prepared materials and sent them to the staff of the residential care centers.

Meanwhile the children whose parents are with low levels of education more often asked for homework help.

We also used the time to prepare our new initiative called Summer stories with horses. We created special educational materials which will be used by the children who are going to participate in all new activities starting in the beginning of July. We believe that horse riding will bring a lot of fun and new positive emotions to the kids after the long period staying at home.

Dear Friends,

Along with the ongoing educational activities we always try to organize creative ones as well. During the winter season kids do not spend enough time outside. Therefore, we used the sunny days and, together with our partners, organized some events. The funniest one was the Kite making workshop. All the kids created their own kites. Since the event was also part of the Refugee Month, we encouraged the children to decorate their kites with messages of tolerance and acceptance.

What is winter without Christmas? The kids were so excited to participate in the Xmas card-making workshop, they learned new techniques and designed amazing greeting cards, tree ornaments and decorations.

The cookie workshop was a great activity for an unexpected holiday at the end of January. For the first time they tried the special recipe for butter cookies.

Dear Friends,

In September the kids have started the new school year. Some of them were really excited because this is their first year at school while the others couldn’t wait to meet again their schoolmates and share with them their summer adventures.

Thanks to donations we will continue to carry out the Afterschool program. Together with all ongoing activities, we have started a group for development of social skills. It was designed for the kids aged 12 to 15 who have behavioral problems and difficulties communicating with their classmates. The main aims of the group are to encourage the kids to build self-confidence and self-esteem, to learn how important is to be respectful of others and to treat them in a good way. Through various role plays, different types of exercises and activities they will explore how they participate in different social situations, how they collaborate with the others and what is their place in their class, in their group of friends. Also, we hope that all the group activities will help them to communicate better with their families.

Here in Bulgaria, the children have 10 – 14 weeks for summer holidays depending on which grade they are in. Usually this is the happiest time of the year abound with new experiences, opportunities to make new friends, play, create memories and develop essential social skills. But for underprivileged children the school holidays are impoverished period of isolation, boredom, and inactivity.

Your kind donation secured the Summer Club as a part of our Afterschool program. This summer we are providing 25 children with safe summer activities that support their personal and academic growth.

Thanks to long-term partnerships with different organizations we sent 11 children aged 10 – 16 to two different mountain camps for a week. There they did various activities such as swimming, hiking, rock climbing, riding, making arts and enjoying campfires.

Educational activities in the Summer Club continue till 15th of September.
