With your help we have now completed the first science laboratory and added two new classrooms and sanitary composting latrines to the Milembe Girls School. Since our last report we have been working to finish the structures and new desks and cabinets for students and teachers. All of the buildings were constructed using local materials, and the Africa Schoolhouse team built a new window using clear fiberglass roofing material designed to be water tight while allowing light and air to flow into the classroom. We have also constructed new laboratory tables equipped with propane for experiments, and a gravity rainwater catchment system that will permit running water in the buildings. The composting latrines are the first to be built in Misungwi town. We are so proud of our team’s quality construction and attention to detail!
The science laboratory and classrooms are already benefitting the students at the school. Fadhila is but one of the 420 girls that will one day benefit from the Milembe Girls School. Fadhila is a strong student in Form 3 at Milembe School, far surpassing the 4th grade education of her mother and grandmother. She walks over an hour to get to school and dreams of becoming a nurse. Fadhila can now learn science firsthand with the new laboratory facilities you have helped us to build. An understanding of science will help Fadhila pass her exams to be accepted to the next level of high school and later begin her nursing training. With school campuses like Milembe, students like Fadhila will have greater possibilities to complete their studies and make their dreams a reality.
These buildings are just one part of the larger Girls School campus. Our next phase goal is to add a dormitory for forty girls, a kitchen and dining space, housing for a dorm mother and teacher and teacher’s offices. As we wrap up Phase 1 of the Milembe Girls School project, we are invigorated to begin Phase 2! Thank you for all of your support that is making education a reality for the girls at Milembe!
