Expanding Impact of the Milembe Dormitory Compound

By Dr. Aimee Bessire | Founder and Director

We are excited to share that the Africa Schoolhouse team will soon complete an enclosure connecting all of the buildings at the Milembe School Dormitory Compound. The enclosure unites the dormitory, dining hall and kitchen, the dorm mother’s house, bathing house, and composting latrines, while providing safety and privacy for the girls living in the compound.

With the full Dormitory now complete, the Africa Schoolhouse team, including the architectural partners at Scattergood Design, who designed the buildings, are now working with architects and engineering specialists at Ardhi University in Dar es Salaam to fully assess the compound in order to expand its impact. Our goal is to learn what is working well and what we might improve upon in order to refine the prototype and make it even more welcoming, environmentally sustainable, affordable and easier to construct at any rural school.

Together with the specialists from Ardhi University, we are researching and learning from the girls living at the Milembe Compound, the teachers, the school committee, and local District officials in order to fully assess the buildings. After evaluating the Milembe School Dormitory Compound we plan to provide the new building plans to the government for use at any rural school. Africa Schoolhouse will continue to partner and raise funds to build the Dormitory Kit to support girls in need, tracking their success, and cheering them on!

We are so grateful for your support! As global citizens we all can play a role in supporting girls’ education, fostering equality and empowerment for true and lasting change. We want to see all girls empowered through their education. Girls have the power to change the world!
