Construction Complete at the Girls' Dorm Compound!

By Aimee Bessire | Founder and Director, Africa Schoolhouse

We are so excited to share the news with you— we are completing the last details on the Milembe Secondary School Dormitory Compound! Thanks to your generous support, the Africa Schoolhouse team has finished constructing:

  • Dormitory for 50 girls
  • Hygiene Building with shower stalls, sinks, and composting latrines
  • 54,000 liter in-ground rainwater catchment with gravity water system to sustainably support all of the water needs in the Hygiene Building
  • House for the Dorm Mother
  • Dining Hall and Kitchen, a flexible, multi-use space that can be used as a study hall, student center, performance space, and even includes a much-needed extra classroom and office on a second floor mezzanine
  • Rainwater catchment system to support all water needs in the Dining Hall and Kitchen

We have purchased 50 mattresses and are now installing electricity and fixtures, and purchasing furniture. The girls are planting seedlings around the campus, and we have added fruit trees, flowers, and shrubs and are now doing the final compound cleanup to get it ready for girls to move in. Students like Elizabeti have told us how excited they are! We still need to purchase a propane cooking system, pots and pans, dishes, cups, utensils, and mosquito nets. But we are so close!

Girls in Rural Tanzania

For many girls in rural Tanzania, attending school is an unattainable goal. Living in safe space at the Milembe Secondary campus will enable at risk girls to complete school. Every girl who finishes her education helps end the cycle of poverty.

Thank you for all of your support. We could not have done this without you! You are positively impacting so many lives!

Please follow us on Instagram and Facebook! We are now posting regularly and hope you will follow us to see the incredible work the team is doing!
