We have so much to share! Thanks to your support, we have accomplished a great deal since our last news update. The Africa Schoolhouse team is currently finishing the Dining Hall and Kitchen at the Milembe Dormitory Compound.
To date, the team has now completed a Dormitory for 50 girls, a Hygiene Building with showers, sinks, and composting toilets, a house for the dorm mother, and now the Dining Hall and Kitchen. We are also installing a 54,000 liter in-ground rainwater catchment cistern to sustainably support all of the water needs at the hygiene building.
The new multi-use Dining Hall and Kitchen can be used as a study hall, student center, performance space, and even includes a much-needed extra classroom on a second floor mezzanine. The kitchen has propane stoves that will help reduce deforestation from the burning of wood and will use rainwater harvested from the sloped roofs for cooking and washing dishes.
Tanzanian students have been back in school since June 29 and the girls are eagerly awaiting the completion of the Compound. They keep asking when they can move in!
Working during the pandemic
The Africa Schoolhouse team has done all of this work in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. They have maintained safety procedures onsite, including frequent handwashing, wearing masks, and social distancing. We are thankful the team has remained healthy and well and we have had no reported cases.
Girls in Rural Tanzania
For many girls in rural Tanzania, attending school is an unattainable goal. Living in safe space at the Milembe Secondary campus will enable at risk girls to complete school. Every girl who finishes her education helps end the cycle of poverty. Thank you for all of your support. You are positively impacting the lives of so many girls!
