Thanks to your incredible help, the Africa Schoolhouse team has completed a dormitory for 50 girls, a hygiene building with sinks, showers, and composting latrines, and a house for a dorm mother. We are now hard at work on the dining hall and kitchen to complete the compound for girls to move in for the July semester. This multi-use building will also serve as a study hall, student center, and even has space for a much-needed extra classroom. The kitchen includes propane stoves that will help reduce deforestation from the burning of wood. Rainwater harvested from the sloped roofs and stored in large in-ground cisterns will be used for cooking and washing dishes. Girls are eagerly awaiting the completion of the Compound—they keep asking when they can move in!
The Situation in Tanzania
Tanzanian schools are currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic but may reopen for final year secondary school students on June 1. Students and families all over Tanzania face the dread of rising virus numbers. Without widespread Wi-Fi or computers in the home, teacher-involved homeschooling is not possible.
Keeping our Team Safe during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Project Manager Jefta Kishosha began early onsite education about the COVID-19 pandemic before the first case hit Tanzania. He set up protocols for the worksite, including handwashing stations, recommendations for safe distancing while working and social distancing on and off the worksite, and new serving methods for meals. The team has continued with daily protocol meetings and assessments of day-to-day changes in Tanzania. All are now wearing beautiful kitenge cloth masks! Keeping our team safe has been our priority as we also work to complete the dormitory compound for girls to have safe space to move into.
Your support means everything to the girls at Milembe School For many girls in rural Tanzania, attending school is an unattainable goal. We are so grateful for all you have done to help us complete the dormitory compound for girls to have safe space for their education.
