Update on the Milembe School Storm Repairs

By Jane Oppenheimer | Project Leader and Board Secretary

Thanks to your help, the Africa Schoolhouse team was able to complete repairs on the storm-damaged roofs at the Milembe Secondary School!

The Milembe School lost roofing on most of its classrooms and the two new laboratory buildings as a result of a powerful and unexpected storm that ripped through the region in August. The local government at Misungwi District raised community funds to repair two of the classrooms and, with your support, Africa Schoolhouse repaired the rest of the classrooms and the student latrines. Thanks to you, we were able to help students get back to their studies within six weeks.

Students were not able to go to school until the repairs were complete, but Head Teacher Florencia reported that the roofs were finished in time for the Form 4 students to sit for their national exams. She expressed her deepest gratitude for all of your help restoring the school buildings: “God bless all those who made it succeed.” Students are relieved to return to their classrooms again. Elizabeth, a Form 3 student, said: “It’s so nice to be back in school, I just want to be able to continue with my studies.”

We hope that girls like Elizabeth will soon have the opportunity to live on campus at Milembe School. Stay tuned—we are returning our focus to the Milembe dormitory compound and hope to break ground in early 2019. Thank you for all of your assistance in helping us meet our fundraising goals and complete the repairs after the storm damage! We appreciate each and every one of you!
