By Mamadou Kane and Liz Chandler | Diapalante Centre Co-ordinator and Trustee
This year at the Diapalante Community Education Centre in Kaolack has been filled with stories of determination and hope. Through the Learning for 100 Adults program, more than 100 men and women - most of whom never had the chance to go to school or did not complete school - took their first steps toward literacy, confidence, and a more sustainable future.
Your support has made this possible.
For our learners, the Centre is more than a place to study. It is a safe and welcoming space where they can practice reading, writing, and arithmetic without fear of embarrassment. A place where they are encouraged to speak French - the official language of Senegal, and English - the most common international language, opening up new opportunities in work and in daily life. And it is a place where friendships are formed (we had our first marriage between members this year), and self-belief begins to grow.
Learning that Changes Lives
Lessons are interactive and practical:
These moments may seem small, but together they create a profound shift: adults who once felt excluded from education now see themselves as capable learners.
The Human Impact
Many participants say they were inspired to join because of the success they saw in their neighbours and friends.
Ndeye, a fabric seller, shared her progress:
“Thanks to Diapalante, I learned to read and write and to use a calculator. This helps me not only in my daily life, but also in my work.”
Stories like hers highlight how the program empowers people to provide for their families, manage their businesses more effectively, and participate more fully in their community.
Looking to the Future
Next year, we hope to go further and are exploring adding modules in computer literacy and digital marketing—skills that are becoming essential in today’s economy. With your continued support, these new opportunities will help even more adults improve their futures.
Thank You
The Learning for 100 Adults program is changing lives in Kaolack every day. Behind every learner’s success is the kindness and generosity of our supporters.
Together, we are proving that it is never too late to learn.
