About Mbagnicke

By Mamadou Kane | Diapalante Centre Co-ordinator

In this report I would like tell you, our funders, about Mbagnick, one of our members, and his motivation to learn, his journey, challenges, and successes since joining our Centre.

Mbagnick is a 44 years-old merchant and father of 3 girls and 1 boy. He runs a store in the Kaolack central market, where he sells clothes, shoes, and various baby items. Like many other merchants, he faces daily challenges making enough profit to support his family, but his determination to find solutions to his problems is what sets him apart.

Before joining the Diapalante Community Education Centre 7 month ago, Mbagnick could neither read nor write in either French or English. This situation limited not only his ability to manage his business, but also his interactions with his customers and suppliers. Aware of these limitations, he decided to take matters into his own hands. This is how he learned about Diapalante from a business friend who had already benefited from our unique programme offering free lessons and a flexible approach to teaching enabling people to attend around their existing commitments.

From the moment he arrived at the Centre, Mbagnick was strongly motivated to progress. He comes to the centre 4 evenings a week, as soon as he finishes work, often just 15 minutes before 9pm when the Centre closes. He is keen to become literate in French and learn the English associated with his trade. He had quickly made significant progress, and appreciates that I stay a little late to help him move forward with some one to one attention. His French language skills have improved significantly, allowing him to better communicate with some customers and expand his clientele. He is building his beginners skills in English - part of his plan to use English language to allow him to buy in China.

Language learning has also had a positive impact on his self-confidence. Mbagnick began to feel more comfortable in his daily interactions, whether with customers at the market or when dealing with suppliers. He even started to use digital tools to manage his business, something that he had previously considered unthinkable.

This week, Mbagnick obtained a visa to visit China. His trip will allow him to purchase goods directly from suppliers, which is an important milestone for his business. He says he is confident in being able to communicate in his limited English and French during his transactions abroad. This opportunity not only represents a turning point in his career, but also an inspiring example for other members of our community. Members like Mbagnick are a source of inspiration for many. His presence at the Centre reminds young learners, who may never consider why they are sent to school, of the importance of education.

Mbagnick illustrates the positive impact the Diapalante Centre can have on individuals' lives. By offering literacy classes and language training, we contribute to the empowerment of our community members. He is a living example of how education can transform lives and open doors.

Mbagnick has become a valued member of our Diapalante Community Centre. He has shown determination, resilience, and willingness to learn. He is also very generous and doesn't hesitate to give back. On several occasions, he has provided coffee to members during our meetings or contributed paper for printing class exercises. His spirit of solidarity and desire to help others are a testament to his commitment to the community. We look forward to following his journey and supporting his future achievements. His success is an inspiration to us all, and we hope he continues to progress and achieve his dreams.
