We would like to express our gratitude to those who have contributed through donations to help families in extreme poverty in Tierra Bomba Island which has been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Colombian national and local governments mandated a quarantine since March 2020 which included school closures until the end of the school year in November. Schools transitioned to virtual teaching and parents needed to homeschool their children; however, due to the lack of internet access, 95% of the children have not been able to participate in virtual classes. Economically, the families that support themselves from the fishing and touristic industry, have been greatly impacted due to these activities not being able to carry out since the quarantine was mandated. Fundacion Dones de Misericordia has supported 840 families by providing nutritious food items such as whole chickens and nonperishable food items. Clothing has been provided to children from 4-7 years of age.
Our goal is to be able to provide a reliable internet connection that would allow the children to access virtual classes through the end of the school year in November and provide computers to facilitate children's workshops and parenting workshops.
The Story of Yon
Yon is a 20-year-old young adult born in Tierra Bomba Island. Fundación Dones de Misericordia started serving this community in 2005 by promoting social development. At the time Yon was a 5-year-old boy full of dreams and Fundacion Dones de Misericordia started supporting those dreams by promoting spiritual, emotional, and social transformation. Yon is thankful to God to have met Arlena who he says is “a blessing instrument on earth to guide and bless his life” Fundación Dones de Misericordia has helped Yon to reach his dreams. Currently, Yon is a law student and a positive leader who gives back to his community by helping to implement the programs developed by Fundacion Dones de Misericordia. Yon says “ I am an honest young man with clear goals and want to be better every day, thanks to Fundacion Dones de Misericordia led by its president, Arlena Hoyos”
